Singapore Management University

Officially incorporated on 12 January 2000, Singapore Management University (SMU) is Singapore's third university. Its educational and administrative practices are modeled after American institutions, in particular the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, which has played a central role in SMU's development.

To deliver its world-class curriculum, an outstanding faculty has been handpicked to advance knowledge in teaching and research. Besides recruiting some of the best academics in their field, SMU also taps successful businessmen for their specific expertise and management skills to combine academic vigour with hands-on business savvy.

Today, SMU is home to over 5,400 students and comprises six schools: Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Accountancy, School of Information Systems – with which IT-renowned Carnegie Mellon University is playing a strategic partnership role. For expansion and strategic reasons, the School of Economics and Social Sciences was restructured in March 2007 into two schools namely, the School of Economics and the School of Social Sciences. A new School of Law opened in August 2007.

SMU offers bachelor's programmes in business and management-related areas, ranging from Accountancy, Business Management, Economics, Information Systems Management, Laws and Social Science. The university also offers master's degree programmes – MBA Master of Business Administration, Master of IT in Business (Financial Services), Master of Professional Accounting, Master of Science in Applied Economics, Master of Science in Applied Finance, Master of Applied Finance (China) and Master of Science in Wealth Management. The Graduate Studies Office in the Office of Research, in coordination with programme directors in the individual schools, supports both the PhD and Master Degrees by research. These include a Master of Science in Economics (Research), Master of Science in Finance (Research), Master of Science in Management (Research) and Master of Science in Operations Management (Research), PhD in Economics and PhD in Information Systems.

SMU also has a dedicated Office of Research, a number of centres of excellence, and provides public and customised programmes through Executive Education. Collaborations with leading institutions, including The Wharton School, Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago, allow SMU to draw on academic and research strengths across all major disciplines.

SMU moved into its permanent campus right in the heart of Singapore in January 2006. The new state-of-the-art 4.5 hectare campus, located in the civic and business district of the city, will support the university's eventual 6,500 undergraduates, along with students in its future graduate programmes.
