10 years MDRC

MDRC has implemented various projects on national and international level:

  • MDRC has started its first research and training project titled “Mongolia’s development strategy research project” from 1998 to 2000 financially supported by the Nippon Foundation of Japan. The project consisted of building 5 research teams assigned to conduct research in 5 areas of interest:  Mongolia’s culture, tradition and socio-economic peculiarities, environment and pasture based livestock production, national regional zoning and development, macro and micro economic aspects and national security problems; training course for members of Parliament and some policy-makers on the topic of basic concept of development economics, development lessons of some Asian countries and conferences.
  • MDRC has implemented a second project entitled “The Role of Mongolia for the Peaceful and Stable Development of Northeast Asia” between 2001 and 2006. The project was supported by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan. Within the framework of the Project, eight international conferences have been organized and attended by scholars and experts, as well as government officials, parliament members from Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, China, the USA, and Singapore. Conference documentation and reports on research works were published on each occasion for policy makers and the general public.
  • One of the main activities of the project were  fact finding missions or study tours to abroad. The tours were attended by not only MDRC staff but also senior researchers on various fields, government officials and members of parliament etc. The tours were conducted to Tumen River area, Nordic countries, China, Russia, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea. The  purpose of the fact finding missions  were to search possibilities of establishing new mechanisms for regional cooperation, gain opportunities for trade and investment, facilitation of transit access, forge people- to- people contacts, learn from experiences of the rapid economic development and get briefing towards building Northeast Asia economic integration etc.   

Activities in 2006:

The Mongolian Development Research Centre (MDRC) organized an International conference on "Towards Building and Strengthening the Role of Mongolia in Northeast Asia" on 23-24 February 2006 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In conjunction with the Conference, MDRC convened a half-day Inauguration Session of the “Ulaanbaatar Forum for East Asia” on 24 February  held under the tutelage of H.E. Mr. Nambaryn Enkhbayar, President of Mongolia. Key participants and researchers from the previous conferences gathered in Ulaanbaatar, evaluated research works and issued  a “Policy Recommendation Paper” for the Government of Mongolia.

MDRC Board members include well-known scholars, researchers as well as Government officials and diplomats: Dr. Ts. Batbayar, Dr. S. Lhagva, Dr. L. Nyamtseren, Ambassador B. Bathishig, Ambassador O. Ochirjav, Japanese professor Sumio Kuribayashi, Professor Takashi Shirasu, Prof. Seiji Naya etc.
